FOR 14 years, Tornete Mathoasi has been a married woman without even knowing it.The 42-year-old from Tembisa, Ekurhuleni made the horrifying discovery after visiting her child’s school to apply for a bursary.
Tornete told Daily Sun she was asked to bring a marriage certificate.
“I was shocked to the core,” she said.
“My baby daddy and I are planning to tie the knot after 25 years of dating.”
Tornete said according to Home Affairs, she has been married to a man named Ghulam Nabi in 2004.
“My marriage certificate says we got married in a civil marriage in 2004 in Joburg. What is surprising is that my so called husband does not have an ID number on the marriage certificate.
“Only his date of birth of date appears on the certificate,” she said.
Tornete said her daughter is unable to get a bursary because of the marriage bungle.
“On top of this, my partner wants us to get married but we can’t. This is so frustrating.
“My life is stuck in limbo.
“This has negatively affected our relationship because he does not trust me anymore,” she added. Home Affairs spokesman Thabo Mokgola said Tornete should visit their nearest Home Affairs offices with a certified affidavit from the police. If the marriage certificate is fraudulent, the marriage will simply be annulled.
“However, we will investigate the matter to establish the validity of the claim,” said Mokgola.
