NOZIPHO Banda (31) knew where to find the traditional herbs she needed to make her medicines. On Wednesday she went to an area rich in plant life. But death was waiting too, and the traditional healer fell from a cliff and onto the rocks below.

Villagers from Ndwedwe Mission near KwaDukuza, north of Durban, are still reeling from the shock of the horrific incident.

Nozipho allegedly fell from the top of a cliff and tumbled many metres through the air before her body smashed onto rocks in the middle of the cliff face.

Daily Sun was told that at the time of the incident Nozipho was collecting herbs for her healing medicines. She apparently lost her footing on top of the cliff.

A resident, Mandla Gumede (36), said he was traumatised after seeing Nozipho’s body injured in such a horrible way.

“Many of her bones were broken. Judging by the injuries to her body and the height of the cliff, chances she could survive were very slim.

‘It was very unfortunate that she lost her life in such a terrible way. Everyone who has been to the scene is still shocked,” he said.

IPSS Medical Rescue Services spokesman Paul Herbst said paramedics had to use advanced climbing equipment to get up the steep cliff to reach the body, which was entangled in branches among the rocks.

“Specialised equipment and systems were established to lower the body and the body was then carried, with the help of locals, for approximately 5km to an extraction point.”

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident and said an inquest docket was opened at Ndwedwe cop shop.

Nozipho’s brother, Kati Ngcobo, asked to be contacted later.
