In a bizarre incident that left residents of Matovani Village under Chief Mutema in Gutu shell shocked, a 22 year old man hanged himself from a tree last week after he had burnt down three huts at his parent’s homestead.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector Peter Zhanero confirmed the incident.
Close sources told The Mirror that William Magaya (22) was a psychiatric patient who at times could be wild and violent.
Constable Musamwira stationed at Nerupiri Base attended the scene and also confirmed the incident.
Magaya was seen drinking beer at Mutema Township in Gutu at around 1100hrs.
He was seen by people going home from the bar where he burnt down three huts that belonged to his parents.
A close source who decline to be named said that before he committed suicide Magaya wrote a letter claiming that he chose to die because of poverty.
“Ini hangu ndazvisungurira nekuti imi madzikoma angu nemi vabereki vangu hamusi kundichengeta, munongonditarisa ini ndichitambura saka zviri nani kuti ndibve hangu pano panyika,”  read part of the letter.
Other villagers who declined to be named told The Mirror that Magaya had been bewitched by his family.
School children who were their way from school saw Magaya hanging on a tree and rushed to report the matter to the seniors.
