A Limpopo man who claimed to be a sangoma with magic powers over crocodiles has reportedly died after a crocodile apparently attacked him.

According to reporters who rushed to the site after his wife called police and paramedics, Hakata had dived into a local lake in the province to show off his powers before a group of visitors to his shrine last week.

The visitors were looking for potions against crocodiles as they hoped to enter the lucrative crocodile skin trade. The men claimed to have gotten a contract from Gucci who are to release a crocodile skin range of handbags.

But instead of being protected from the crocs by his supernatural powers, Hakata was reportedly himself killed by them. Witnesses reported that they saw him dragged below the surface of the water while he was chanting and swimming.

Limpopo police was quoted in reports as saying: “We have recovered the his body. I think he was dragged by a croc under the water and then ran out of oxygen. From the pictures I’ve seen, his body is still intact, his arms and legs are still there.”
