An Eastern Cape woman has been charged with child abandonment after she abandoned her grandson in the forest because his `18 year old mother had failed to provide financial support. The child subsequently went missing and is still to be located.

Stutterheim – A 16 month old baby from Stutterheim, Eastern Cape is missing after his grandmother threw away the child in a field because the mother had failed to take care of the baby.

The young child, Abukhanyisile Sitebisa, was taken to a bushy forest near the river at Mbulelo Location on the 19th of June and abandoned there by his maternal grandmother, who was protesting the failure of the child’s 18 year old mother to support the child’s financial needs.

A woman has been charged after she abandoned her grandson in the forest after his `18 year old mother failed to provide financial support. Anyone with information that could be helpful is urged to contact South African Police.

The woman is said to have returned to the area 10 days later on the 28th of June to search for the child but failed to locate him.

A report was made to the police on the same day, and a search by the SAPS failed to recover the child or any remains.

The police proceeded to arrest the grandmother, and charged her with child abandonment. The woman appeared in court today.

Police are appealing to members of the public with any information to come forward.
